By September 1918, the stalemate of trench warfare had been broken. Allied
troops were advancing, pushing the German army back to its homeland. At
5:00 AM on September 13 the American forces attacked in the St. Mihiel
sector of northern France. The advance forced the Germans from territory
they had occupied from 1914 and marked the beginning of the end of the
war.
